About Our Leander Youth Basketball Program
Leander sits right next door to two of our three north-side gyms, which makes it one of the easiest places in Central Texas to get a kid into serious basketball. Austin Sports Center Cedar Park and Henry Middle School are minutes away, and Round Rock Sports Center is a short run east.
Our Leander group pulls players from Danielson, Leander, Stiles and Wiley middle schools, and from Leander High School, Glenn High School and Rouse High School. Leander ISD has expanded fast, and with three high schools inside the city there is real competition for varsity minutes. School coaches at those campuses are looking for handles that survive pressure, defensive footwork, clean shooting mechanics and a player who reads the floor — which is exactly what our sessions are built around.
The thing Leander parents tell us they value is continuity. A player can start in Little Hoopers at six, join a select team in 4th grade if they are a boy or 5th if they are a girl, and keep working with coaches who already know their game through high school. Teammates come from Leander, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Georgetown and Brushy Creek, so your child usually knows half the roster already. Call 512-312-6283 to find the right group.

Little Hoopers is where a lot of Leander families start. Built for boys and girls ages 6 to 8, it covers dribbling with both hands, catching and passing, shooting form and how to share the floor, all through games rather than drills so nobody stands in line. Sessions run at Austin Sports Center Cedar Park and Henry Middle School, both just down the road from Leander. Call 512-312-6283 for the next start date.

Leander ISD is one of the strongest basketball districts in Central Texas, and it keeps growing. Impact Sportz was founded in Chicago by Lonnie Welch and Toron Clark and relocated to Austin, coaching Central Texas players since 2010. We build our training around what school coaches actually ask for: ball handling under pressure, honest defense and players who understand spacing. Boys join teams in 4th grade and girls in 5th, and a Leander player can stay with the same coaching staff right through high school rather than restarting every year.
Leander families have the shortest drive in our program after Cedar Park. Our north-side practices run at Austin Sports Center Cedar Park, Henry Middle School and Round Rock Sports Center, all a few minutes from Leander. Your athlete trains alongside kids from Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Georgetown, Round Rock and Brushy Creek, which is a deeper pool than school ball alone provides. If you have been searching for youth basketball near you in Leander, this is about as close as a serious AAU program gets. Call 512-312-6283.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
Where do Leander players practice?
At our north-side gyms: Austin Sports Center Cedar Park, Henry Middle School and Round Rock Sports Center. All three are a short drive from Leander, and the Cedar Park gyms in particular are only minutes away. The exact gym depends on your child’s team and the season, so call 512-312-6283 for the current schedule.
Can my child play for Impact Sportz and still play for their Leander ISD team?
Yes. The main AAU stretch runs February through July, right after the school season ends, so the calendars fit together rather than competing. We also field fall and winter teams for players who want to keep developing. Tell your coach your school schedule and we will work around it.
What age can my child start?
Six, in Little Hoopers, which runs ages 6 to 8 and focuses on fundamentals and getting comfortable in a gym. Team basketball starts in 4th grade for boys and 5th grade for girls and continues through high school. Call 512-312-6283 if you are not sure where your child fits.
Will this help my child make their Leander ISD school team?
That is what most families come to us for. Leander ISD programs are competitive, and coaches are evaluating ball handling under pressure, shooting mechanics, defensive positioning and basketball IQ. Those are the things we drill. A longer season and tougher competition than school ball alone tends to show up at tryouts.
How do we get started?
Call 512-312-6283 or email impactsportz@gmail.com with your child’s age, grade and experience, and we will point you to the right group and the next tryout date. Plenty of Leander families start with a camp so their child can meet the coaches before committing to a select roster.
Is AAU basketball better than high school?
AAU is an excellent outlet for fans and coaches to see top talent playing together in the same building. Compared to high school ball, there is only one game per night, and all of the top talents might not be playing that night.
How do I join an AAU team?
We have tryouts 4 times a year. Grades 4th through 8th have 4 tryouts per year. High School has 3 tryouts per year.
Do you have to pay for AAU basketball?
AAU does not come cheap. Depending on the team, families can expect to pay $400 to $4,000 per summer to play, including uniforms. … Most programs offer financial assistance for students that need it, but normally it only covers the cost to join the team, not the peripheral and all the activities.
