Killeen has a genuine basketball culture. Killeen ISD runs four comprehensive high schools inside the city, and the competition for varsity minutes across Killeen High School, Ellison, Shoemaker and Chaparral is real. Players come up through Patterson, Rancier, Manor, Palo Alto, Roy J. Smith, Live Oak Ridge, Liberty Hill and Aycock middle schools, and a lot of them are ready for a bigger stage before they get one.
That is where we fit, and we will be straight with you about how. Impact Sportz is an Austin-area program. There is no Impact gym in Killeen, and the drive to our north-side facilities is more than an hour each way. We are not going to pretend otherwise to win a phone call.
What we do offer is a level of AAU competition that is hard to find without traveling. At Austin Sports Center Cedar Park, Henry Middle School and Round Rock Sports Center, a Killeen player goes against kids from Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander and Pflugerville week after week. For most families the sensible first step is a camp or clinic, so your child meets the coaches and you see what the travel really feels like before committing to a season. Impact Sportz was founded in Chicago by Lonnie Welch and Toron Clark, who relocated the program to Austin because they believed young players here deserved the same level of coaching and competition. We have been coaching Central Texas kids since 2010. Killeen turns out tough, well-coached basketball players, and the ones who train with us tend to arrive already used to physical, disciplined play. Boys join teams in 4th grade and girls in 5th. When a Killeen family drives down, we owe them a practice worth the trip: real teaching, real reps and coaches who know their name.

What ages and grades can play?
Little Hoopers runs ages 6 to 8. Team basketball starts in 4th grade for boys and 5th grade for girls and continues through high school. Killeen ISD students are welcome — we are an independent AAU club, not tied to any school or district, so there is no conflict with school ball.
When does the season run?
The main AAU stretch runs February through July, which is when most tournaments and travel weekends land. We also field fall and winter teams for families who want to keep playing year-round. For Killeen families weighing the commute, the spring and summer calendar is usually the easiest window to plan around.

Is AAU basketball better than high school?
AAU is an excellent outlet for fans and coaches to see top talent playing together in the same building. Compared to high school ball, there is only one game per night, and all of the top talents might not be playing that night.
How do I join an AAU team?
We have tryouts 4 times a year. Grades 4th through 8th have 4 tryouts per year. High School has 3 tryouts per year.
Do you have to pay for AAU basketball?
AAU does not come cheap. Depending on the team, families can expect to pay $400 to $4,000 per summer to play, including uniforms. … Most programs offer financial assistance for students that need it, but normally it only covers the cost to join the team, not the peripheral and all the activities.
